Organizing Tips for 2012: Emptying over Rearranging

Over the past week, I've been in the process of organization overhaul of our downstairs. I'm going to share the transformation with you later this month, but today's tip has come in quite handy for me during this process, so here it is:

{When organizing a particular closet or set of shelves, etc., completely empty it out first!!!}

That's it. Simple, I know. BUT - you will be surprised at how tempting it is to just start rearranging. But no matter how well you rearrange things, the result will never be as good as if you empty first.

The empty closet or shelf somehow gives you a fresh new look at things, and you aren't limited by any existing organizational boundaries. In fact, you may decide that that box of tableware or extra bed linens doesn't belong in that particular closet at all!

Don't just rearrange...empty!!

  1. Perfect advice! It will look worse before it looks better but that's exactly what we need to do - empty 1st!

  2. This is one tip that I always try to follow. I always end up finding stuff to donate or move elsewhere.. and it ultimately makes the whole process better. If I just rearranged chances of the donate or move stuff would just get shoved back into the area.

  3. I soooo need to rearrange my closet in my sewing room. It hold my clothes and other... stuff... lol. I dread it so much because I know I have to empty it out completely! I'd love a beautiful closet set-up like the 1st picture without having to spend an arm and a leg. Totally need to start looking for used furniture I can paint and wall mount, huh?!
