Refresh, Restyle, Redo: Antiquing Glaze

This week I'm preparing for an upcoming design workshop. I will be talking about using what you already have to give your home a fresh new look! Here is a glimpse...

To give accessories or furniture a completely new {old!} look, you can use an antiquing glaze. It's soooo simple! If you like the elegantly worn, distressed look, then you will love this technique. I started with an old wooden candlestick.

I used latex paint (two coats of Sherwin Williams Sleepy Blue) and let it dry.

Then, I applied Valspar Antiquing Glaze in Asphaltum.

Using a soft rag I applied the glaze over the entire candlestick, allowing it to settle in the crevices. I then used another rag to gently wipe off the excess, leaving some on the smooth part of the candlestick and more in the crevices.

The result is a beautifully aged look...
That's all there is to it! The technique works wonderfully on furniture as well.
Happy Glazing!...

  1. Love this! Is it important to use a latex paint as the base?? And where do you get the Valspar?!
